The European Green Deal is a game changer for our society at large, and for the European process industries in particular. It aims notably to cut CO2 equivalent emissions by 50-55% by 2030 and to transform Europe into the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. An unprecedented transformation of production and consumption practices must be deployed at scale over less than 30 years. In this regard, water is a crucial resource for the industrial sector, to which the circularity concept also needs to be applied. This requires innovative technologies to deliver a step change in water efficiency, recycling and security, to recover nutrients and other resources, to allow the industrial sector to access to the right quantity and quality of water, and gradually reduce down to zero the discharges. This will be necessary to contribute to the achievement of a Water-Smart Society.
The Horizon 2020 call for proposal CE-SPIRE-07-2020 – Preserving fresh water: recycling industrial waters – supports from year 2020 the implementation of five projects – Waste2Fresh, AccelWater IntelWATT, AquaSPICE, iWAYS – that aims at contributing to achieve near-zero water discharge using closed-loop systems in combination with recovery of energy and/or recourses through the development of integrated water-smart strategies for industrial processes.
The event, organised by Water Europe, gathers the Coordinators of the above mentioned projects to discuss in this public, clustering event on the achievement, the barriers, the synergies and perspectives from their respective experiences from the projects, with the support of the POs of the EC European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA).
